What keeps you stuck?

Louis Vuitton building in midtown Manhattan New York City

I recently spent a week in NY, and despite living there for over 40 years before decamping to Florida, I still am amazed by something new every time I return – like this building in midtown Manhattan.

My photography skills don’t do it justice, but Louis Vuitton headquarters on Fifth Avenue is made to look like a set of their luxury luggage!

Exposing yourself to something new is one way of getting unstuck. “Why Remain Stuck” is the title of the From Learning To Earning podcast episode where I appeared recently.

While the podcast target audience is teachers, the topic of career change applies across roles. In the episode, we talked about:

  • Why do smart, capable people stay stuck for years even when they know they want out?
  • What’s one small experiment someone can run this month to learn faster than endless self-assessment?
  • How much of ‘career identity’ is actually social—and how do you rebuild a new professional community?

Take a listen HERE, and let me know if there are other career change obstacles you’d like me to address!

It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power. – Alan Cohen
