One of the topics I am most asked about is career security.
- In good times: How do you ensure your work is noticed so you advance your career and get paid what you’re worth?
- In bad times: How do you protect yourself from layoffs and career stagnation?
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to guarantee any one job because, even if you’re doing great, your company may be struggling. Or your manager (or their manager) may prioritize things you’re not working on. Or new leadership comes in and brings in their own people.
Over your career, you can help your career security by proactively managing your career. Be a top performer at the job you have. Keep your eyes and ears open for better opportunities (inside the company and out). Have a strong network and personal brand already in place so you can jump on a new opportunity as you need or want to.
Even the most talented, hard-working professionals are not insulated from career disruption:
- An unexpected layoff
- Restructuring that changes their job for the worse
- Life changes that make their current job no longer fit
The only reliable route to 100% career security is not needing a job at all, or FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early). Even if you love working and don’t plan to retire, you may be retired unexpectedly by a layoff, restructuring or life change. You need to preemptively protect your income from the uncertainty of any one job.
In Making FIRE Possible, my husband and I share the strategies we used to untether from our jobs, even though we lived in a high cost of living city (New York), raised two kids and worked in average industries (HR for me and nonprofit for my husband).
By age 46, we had both left our traditional corporate careers behind for a flexible schedule that lets us pursue our passion for travel and work at what we love.
