I used to overeat at buffets until I tweaked my approach. Before, I would start filling my plate, picking things I wouldn’t pick over other things that were available further down and ending up with too many things, instead of just what I want. Now, I don’t put anything on my plate until I have gone around the whole selection (including and especially desserts!).
The thing about choices is that it’s easy to select from the ones right in front of you, but those choices might not be the best fit. Better to scan your horizon, decide what you really want and need, and then, go after that, whether it’s offered to you, or you need to hustle and create it — i.e., make proactive career choices.
